Project Description

The objective of the Nuumu Waste Management Authority Project collection project is to provide the reservation community with affordable, effective and climate-friendly waste management that addresses all waste streams including curb collection services for all waste streams including conventional waste, recycled items (paper, plastic, glass, electronic and compostable waste) and bulky item pick up and removal.

The Bishop Tribe for years has operated pilot projects focusing on removal of abandoned cars and clean up days. For years the Bishop Tribe has received excellent curbside service by outside operators which in recent years offer recycling as an additional fee. Many of our members are low-income and cannot afford these additional fees.

Creating a tribal-run waste authority will employ tribal members, leverage incentives for climate friendly EV technology, employ income-based sliding scale fees, and be sustainable through tribal subsidies in early stages. Successful implementation of the Tribe’s program is expected to increase diversion of recyclable waste from local landfills by increasing overall participation in curbside recycling in the local community where the support for recycling and waste removal is great in the community.
