Project Description

Chipmunk Canyon represents an opportunity to reimagine recreation in the Eastern Sierra in a way that benefits both people and the land.

Located southwest of Bishop, this beloved area has long been used by hikers, bikers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

This project will lay the groundwork to ensure Chipmunk Canyon is a well-managed, ecologically responsible trail system that reflects the needs of nearby communities.

With input from local residents, Tribes, and public land agencies, the plan will identify where and how recreation can happen responsibly. By investing in local talent—like students from Cerro Coso’s Outdoor Leadership program—and supporting planning and stewardship jobs, the project also advances a regional vision for a stronger, more inclusive outdoor economy.

Ultimately, Chipmunk Canyon could become both a community asset and a model for how thoughtful planning can lead to long-term recreational, cultural, and economic benefits
